When you have wealth you can do more things because you can pay for it. With poverty less things are open to you.

There is some effect because if someone is poor then they would have less of a chance to do well in college because your patents can't pay for it. If your family is wealthy then you can pay for a good college and get a good job. But if someone is poor as a kid then they can still get a good job as an actor or something.

With poverty you are limited in important resources that are neccesary to succeed. With wealth you are more fortunate than average people because you have better resources and a better opportunity to learn, at least when you are starting off

I believe that Kevin Powers is right because a good college makes all the difference in a person's career. A smart, poor person might have less or the same opportunity as a very dumb wealthy person

I also think that there is some effect because people who are poor don't always have the same opportunity as wealthy people like going to college, you're going to need money to pay for your classes, and for those people who want to become doctors need lots of money.

Wealth is money. Poverty being poor. Poverty might have an affect on a person's potential to succeeding because it might be rough to get the money they need to make it happen. But that shouldn't stand in there way. They should at least try to make an effort to get the money they need to succeed.
Being wealthy might be a good thing or a bad thing in some cases. Since your wealthy there is no excuse to succeed. You have the money and you have the resources. Take them while you have them to succeed.
Overall whether you have wealth or poverty it shouldn't stand in your way to get the things you need to succeed.

Yea i agree with Natasha, a poor person would work harder for their goals than a rich person but the rich person would have the tools and supplies needed to succeed because it would be provided by their parents. The poor person could always work hard but would never have the opportunity right there and would have to succeed with limited resources which makes it very hard to succeed

When a person is in poverty, sometimes their confidence is lacking as well as their money. In the 21st century, most things involve money. Someone who is lacking money might believe that they simply cannot succeed in life and so they do not go after what they really want in life. When you are rich, you're secure. You know what you want and you know that you can do what you want. Rich people are secure with themselves. They know they can succeed. People in poverty are typically insecure. Their dreams and needs seem farther away than a rich persons dreams. Rich people are more confident they can succeed whereas people in poverty are down on themselves.

Poverty and health can have a big effect in someones potential to succeed. For example,Oprah grew up poor and was abused. But she still tried and tried to succeed. Now she is widely know in the world, she went from having nothing at all to becoming a very famous person. But someone who doesn't live in poverty, has the exact same chance to become rich. But if you live in poverty you might need to work harder at what you want.

I think wealth can help you succeed because it can open more doors but I don't think you need it. Poverty is something you can overcome if you work hard, and many people have. Everyone has the same potential to succeed if they work hard and don't let anything get in their way. Many wealthy and successful people today had to overcome poverty. It shows that if you really work hard you can do anything.

When you put your best foot forward you can achieve anything. But the main problem in the situation is money. It is still effecting and may be pulling you back from what you can do and or want to do. The more wealthy have it easier because they have no problem with budget. The less wealthy are on a fine line and are restricted i think of their own choices.

Clearly if you come from a wealthy family it's going to be much easier for you to get what you want in life. It's no secret that colleges are much more likely to accept you if your father or mother went there before you or donated the library in your name. There's also the example of Paris Hilton who has no real talent and is famous simply for partying and being her father's daughter. Whereas if you come from a poor family, who lives in the projects, you are really much less likely to succeed because you have substantially less opportunities to succeed. As much as Mrs. Welch would like to believe that everyone has the same opportunities and the world is fair and our country treats everyone equally, that's not how it works. Children who come form rich families are treated with more respect in society. If your daddy is an important person then every college and job you ever apply for will want to be on his good side and accept you. Not every teenage boy from the projects who happens to be a talented football player will be adopted by Sandra Bullock and make it to the NFL. That's not how life works. There are people who try their hardest to succeed even if they come from an unfortunate home life but simply cannot make it because of the massive amount of walls and closed doors their background has placed in front of them. It is certainly possible for these people to succeed but it would be much harder and therefore their potential is dampened. The point of this question is obviously to prove that no matter what your background is or where you come from, if you work hard enough you can achieve your dreams. That is not always true and does not apply in all cases, but the general concept is certainly nice to think about.

In reply to Kevin's first post;
If children come from poor families their only option is not becoming an actor or other things of the sort. They can still get an education and become a doctor or lawyer or any occupation they desire. It may still be much harder for them to achieve these goals, but in some cases, if you can manage to get yourself out of the impoverished life you can attempt to do whatever you want. They are not restricted to a hollywood career. Oprah is a good example of someone who overcame difficulties and got what she wanted. But that doesn't mean that her route is the only way out.

I think if you were poor or rich you still have a chance to have the skill to succeed. Rich and poor people both have the chance of being good at singing, acting or being smart. The only thing that helps rich people more than poor people is if you are rich you have more opportunities to get the chance to succeed.

I totally agree with Emma, and I really like the first sentence about putting your best foot forward that's something my mom says all the time. A few of you said that wealthy people have a way better chance because they can pay for college but if you are poor it might drive you more to be the best student and get a scholarship, for example Oprah's family was poor but see worked hard and got a scholarship to Tennessee State University. Kids who were born into a poor and succeed early in their life and then be able to get a good college education.

I agree with Gabby. She used a great example for her response. In "The Blind" Sandra's character took in the quarterback. He was poor and grew up in the projects but still reached great heights in the NFL. So it doesn't matter whether or not your in poverty or wealthy. You can still reach great heights.

I also agree with Sarah. A lot of well known people today were in poverty once in their lifetime. But they overcame it to reach their goals in life. A person for example is Will.I.Am. He was in poverty as a child. But he worked hard to get to where he is now. He is a great example for the saying, "Work hard to achieve things in life". Another thing to add to Sarah's is she's right about wealth. You don't need the money in order to do well in life and achieve great heights. All you need is a good attitude and the thrive to succeed and you've got your goals in your hands.

I really hate to burst y'all's bubble of "if at first you don't succeed try try again" but just because you try does not mean that you will succeed. Not to imply that you shouldn't try because clearly you should always do your best. But if you live in poverty the odds are really stacked against you. I mean really.

Well. Gabby if you try hard enough you can succeed. So that saying is actually true. Because if I'm correct, Will.I.Am had to "try, try again" to get to where he is now right? And besides. You do have to try and try again to get what you want. It's like doing math. Say someone is not good at, I don't know, algebra? Like with a equation 3x-5=8 or something. And there not good at it. But if you keep on trying you will get it right at one point. So that saying is very true. Just take time to think about everyone who has failed, but got right back up and tried again, and they eventually succeeded.
Well, I personally don't think that being poor affects a person's chance to succeed. Being wealthy however, I think gives them a better chance, but not by much. Really if there was a percentage of the chances, they would be at the same thing, but the wealthy person has about a .1% lead. There really is an equal chance for them to both succeed.

Well. Tacha. (sorry I couldn't remember how to spell in and didn't want to look up at where you typed it.)
I never said that that never works, or that you shouldn't try, or that the philosophy has never worked for anyone. I was just saying that you can't ALWAYS get what you want in life. Because sometimes, there are just too many obstacles in your way.

When you have the money you can pay for what ever you want or want to do, when you don't have the money you can't.
